Copper has shaped the people and places of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula since early native peoples began mining and using it here more than 7,000 years ago. Shallow mines evolved into deep shaft, hard-rock mining and by 1849 this area provided 96% of the entire United States' copper production.
